Meet Our Tutors
Hywel Jenkins
Lead Tutor of COSMiC and Conductor/Tutor for the Senior and Junior Orchestras
Hywel’s teaching blends deep knowledge of classical repertoire and orchestral technique with a lifelong passion for nurturing talent.
He began playing violin at 11 at Elmhurst Grammar School and joined the Mid Somerset Orchestra in 1975. By 1980, he became Leader — a position he held for 42 years.
From 1980 to 1997, he was also lead violinist with Strode Opera. Hywel began teaching full time in 1983 and joined Somerset Music in 1987, becoming Head of Strings in 2000. He remained in that role for over a decade, inspiring young musicians across Somerset.
Since 2007, he’s tutored for the Somerset Youth Orchestra and currently leads the Saltford Orchestra. Hywel joined COSMiC in 1983 and is known for his warmth, skill, and long-standing dedication to the club.


Martin Turner
Folk Group Leader (COSAfolk)
Martin is a classically trained musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Goldsmiths College, followed by several years working as a freelance performer. He later moved into a career in social care but returned to music around 25 years ago, focusing on folk traditions and community music-making.
He has been involved with COSMiC for over 20 years and has led COSAfolk, the club’s folk group, for the past 12. Martin brings a solid musical background and a practical, inclusive approach to teaching, encouraging players of all levels to engage with and enjoy folk music in a relaxed and supportive setting.
Jake Meeking
Guitar Groups
Jake picked up the guitar at age 12, encouraged by his dad and inspired by the REM album Out Of Time. He went on to study music at Strode College, completing a BTEC National in Music, and has since spent over 15 years teaching and performing.
A versatile and experienced musician, Jake has toured with a range of bands and currently plays with J.Jr. He teaches all levels, from absolute beginners to Grade 8 and beyond, covering both acoustic and electric guitar.
Jake leads several of COSMiC’s guitar and rock groups, bringing energy, expertise, and a real love of live music to every session.

Ann Faulkner
Recorders and Percussion Groups
Ann began learning the violin at the age of 7 and has been passionate about music ever since. She now works as a peripatetic music teacher in primary schools and also teaches privately. In addition to violin, Ann teaches piano, guitar, and recorder, offering a broad foundation for young musicians.
A talented soprano, Ann sings with the Yeovilton Military Wives Choir and brings her love of music and performance into every session she leads.
